How to initialize a disk using PowerShell on Windows 10

If you’re using PowerShell to format a hard drive, you’ll notice that the raw disk doesn’t initialize automatically, which means that as long as it’s not initialized you won’t be able to format it.

If you’re planning to use GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition scheme, then you can use this command to initialize the disk:

Initialize-Disk -Number 1

If required, you can initialize a disk to use Master Boot Record (MBR) scheme using this command:

Initialize-Disk -Number 1 -PartitionStyle MBR .
