Windows 10 version 1709 failed to install with error 0x80070057


Some users at the Microsoft forums reported that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update failed install with error 0x80070057.

The eventlog looked like this:

If you’re getting this error while trying to install version 1709, it seems that the following workaround works for most people.

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
  2. Run the following command (enter command one by one and press Enter):
    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop appidsvc
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
    net start bits
    net start wuauserv
    net start appidsvc
    net start cryptsvc
  3. Exit Command Prompt and check if the issue persists.
